31-Aug-2020 : The Brunei Darussalam Climate Change Policy Task Force Workshop on Strategy 1: Industrial Emissions and Strategy 9: Carbon Inventory

The Brunei Darussalam Climate Change Policy Task Force Workshop on Strategy 1: Industrial Emissions and Strategy 9: Carbon Inventory was officiated by Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Ministry of Energy on the 31st August 2020. The two-day workshop was co-organized by the Brunei Darussalam Climate Change Secretariat, Ministry of Development and the Ministry of Energy as lead agencies for both strategies. Facilitated by Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam, the workshop was held at Atria Simpur Hall, Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters and attended by 30 participants comprising of officials from the government and oil and gas industry.

The workshop aims to formulate a comprehensive roadmap and action plan in realising the national carbon emissions reduction target towards a low carbon and climate resilient Brunei Darussalam. The formation of this operating document is the next major step in moving towards a low carbon and climate resilient country. During the workshop, the participants discussed the multi-sectoral roles in addressing climate change issues related to Strategy 1 and 9 as documented in the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP).

The policy document recognises industrial emissions abatement as its first strategy that calls for a reduction in industrial emissions through zero routine flaring and as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP). While, the policy's Strategy 9 calls for a mandatory monthly reporting of carbon inventory. The workshop will be proceeded by another session on Strategy 4: Renewable Energy from 2nd to 3rd September 2020.

The BNCCP has adopted 10 key strategies, in which the Ministry of Energy is primarily responsible for the implementation of strategies related to Industrial Emissions, Renewable Energy and Power Sector Management. The Ministry is responsible of overseeing development of the country's energy sector and will continue to align development with the climate change council's strategic objectives.

BNCCP supports the five main principles of Maqasid Shari'ah by protecting the environment, promoting human security and economic prosperity through a low carbon approach. The strategies also serve to contribute to fulfill the Wawasan Brunei 2015 goals.
